The Sheep Detectives Summary

The Sheep Detectives is mystery/comedy/romance film. It is definitely a British mystery (see below). The main story follows a flock of sheep who try to solve the murder of their shepherd, while also touching on several profound themes.

In the English village of Denbrook, shepherd George Hardy spends his time reading murder mystery novels to his flock of sheep. We learn several things about sheep:

  • The sheep do not believe that they die. Death only exists in the mysteries they hear every night. When sheep die, they turn into clouds.
  • They can believe this because sheep can will themselves to forget. Only one sheep in the flock, Mopple, retains all memories.
  • Sheep are born in the spring. If a lamb is born in winter, the flock will refuse to accept it. There is one winter lamb in George’s flock, and George takes care of it since it has been rejected.

One morning, George is discovered dead outside his trailer. The sheep decide to solve the mystery on their own, led by Lily, (who was always the first to solve the book mysteries), Mopple, and the loner Sebastian.

The Sheep Detectives Review

Like a good British mystery, we have a large group of characters who all have potential motives – and we thus follow seral red herrings. Could it be Reverend Hillcoate? Or the butcher Ham Gilyard? The innkeeper Beth Pennock had intercepted some of George’s mail. Was it her? Or neighboring shepherd Caleb Merrow, who had an argument with George?

There is an impressive cast. I would note Hugh Jackman as George, and Emma Thompson as Lydia Harbottle, George’s solicitor. The voices of the sheep are equally impressive, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Lily, Chris O’Dowd as Mopple, Patrick Stewart as Sir Richfield, and Brett Goldstein as Reggie and Ronnie, twin Norfolk Horn sheep who enjoy bashing things with their horns.

Note that the film is based on the 2005 novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann. From what I can gather, there are significant differences between the book and movie (in case you are a fan of the book and are expecting it to be close).

The Sheep Detectives Discussion Questions

While primarily a family friendly talking animal mystery, the movie contains several lessons to discuss.

  • Who are the “winter lambs” in our society? Among the people you know?
  • Why do we tend to shun those who are different?
  • Is there value in suffering?
  • Why do we need community?
