Quick Piece by Piece Summary
Piece by Piece is a documentary about the life of Pharrell Williams, but instead everything is done in Lego. The film starts with Pharrell’s obsession with music and journeys through his entire career. Throughout, there are several documentary-style interviews with various rappers as well as members of Pharrell William’s family.
Piece by Piece Review
This movie is quite a fun way to present a documentary. The Lego style allows Pharrell Williams’ world and life to really pop off the screen. When I first heard there was going to be a documentary about Pharrell, I was genuinely surprised because I thought he was in his 30s. While watching the Hot Ones episode with him in it, they mention Pharrell growing up with Timbaland and Missy Elliot, which made me realize Pharrell had been around quite a bit longer than I thought.
Pharrell’s ties to the industry early on is definitely the portion of his story that I was least familiar with. The Neptunes was a group with Pharrell and Chad Hugo who were pushing out hit after hit in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. This leads to some massive popularity for them, which goes to Pharrell’s head and leaves him overwhelmed and uninspired.
One of the most fascinating things of Pharrell’s story was the discussion and visuals of synesthesia. When he was a kid, the stereo literally was bursting with color and energy that helped the viewer see how Pharrell viewed music. This carried through when The Neptunes were creating different beats. These beats manifest as fun combinations of different Lego bricks and colors, showing the way Pharrell processes and thinks of his music, even in adulthood.

This leads to Pharrell refocusing on positivity and the things that really matter to him. Pharrell gets married and has his first son. This leads to the sweetest moment in the movie. After feeling uninspired for a bit, Pharrell is playing with his kid and just starts lightly singing “It might seem crazy what I’m about to say…” For those who don’t know, this is the opening line for “Happy”, which is still one of Pharrell’s most popular songs to date.
Ultimately, I think this is a very fun documentary about someone who I personally only knew a passing amount about. You may be a little disappointed if you are going into this expecting it to be more of a Lego movie. Pharrell Williams has had a very interesting life and the positivity that he now pushes into the world is pretty infectious. I would love for this film to be a bit of a gateway to other interesting forms of documentaries or more interesting uses of Lego in film.
Is Piece by Piece Appropriate?
Piece by Piece contains a lot of interviews with some of the most popular rappers of all time. So, with that, there are a few unbleeped cuss words that sneak through (the worst one is “shit”, which comes out a few times). There are also a few filmed videos with bikini clad dancers, but they are all still Lego. Overall, if you have a kid who is interested in music or Pharrell Williams, this should be a fun view for them, otherwise I think the documentary style is just a bit too slow to keep most kid’s attention through the whole film.
