Parent Review of The GOAT movie

I had very low expectations going into this movie and ended up really enjoying it. There are a few things to be aware of. I think the most important is that there is a LOT of bullying and just general meanness. Including cyber bullying. And while they do show a few ways to deal with that, it could have done a better job of addressing it. Definitely something to talk about afterward.

Another trigger warning is that there is a single parent situation, and that parent gets sick and dies. They don’t focus on it a lot, and it went over my kids head. But it hit me in the feels.

I loved how they flipped the typical script on several typical tropes. Like the most intimidating player on the team working to gentle parent his twin daughters. And the little kids idol being a female sports athlete (not because she’s gorgeous, but because she’s awesome and talented!) That you can be an awesome athlete even when you’re short, and about twenty other things! Plus, the plot twist surprised me.

In general it is a very family friendly movie that will leave you with a lot to talk about!

5 Lessons from The GOAT Movie

Lesson #1: Consistent Hard Work Pays Off

Will became a professional athlete overnight, but he had to put in a lot of work over the years to get there. The whole team has to practice and work together consistently before they succeed.

Lesson #2: A Fresh Perspective can Make a Huge Difference

Will was smaller than the rest of the team, and new to it. He gave the team a whole new perspective! And Jett needed to see that people still believed in her and were excited about the sport.

Lesson #3: Investing in Good Friendships is Always Worth It

I loved Will’s friends! When he was homeless, they let him stay with them and didn’t make a big deal out of it. When he was famous, they celebrated with him. And when he crashed hard, they were right there to support him. The team also had to learn how to be good friends to each other.

Lesson #4: Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork

Jett was a one person show until Will came to the team. Because he was small, Will had to learn to play to his strengths. And he helped his team see that they could all do that together. It was only when they really worked as a team that they succeeded.

Lesson #5: We ALL Need People to Believe in Us

Will’s mom and friends believed in him from the beginning. When there was no money or fame. And Jett was refueled when she realized that there were so many people that still believed in her.

We all cried at the end when Jett credited his success to his mom believing in him.

And goodness, I could probably list five more lessons from the GOAT movie. Like dare to dream big. Having a parent believe in you is such a steady and powerful force in a kids life. Our brain is wired to look for confirmation of the bad things we tell ourselves to keep us safe. So we have to really train it to look for the good stuff, like repeating affirmations. Don’t forget the people who helped you get to where you are. Believing in a loosing team, or yourself when you’re loosing, can be difficult but worth it. You don’t need to beat down a bully to win. It’s OK to walk away from bullies. So many good topics and lessons to discuss!! Let us know what your favorite part was!
