Taking Teens to See the Odyssey? Here’s my Parent Review

**ODYSSEY MOVIE SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT**

I remember seeing my first gory rated R movie. And how uncomfortable is was to watch the more intimate and gory scenes with my parents. To the credit of this team, there is a lot in this movie that is strongly implied without being shown. And I SO appreciated that. There’s references to r*pe and s*x but no graphic scenes. And there is even a lot of the gore than is implied and not shown. However there is still a LOT of intense violence shown.

If your pre-teen or teen can handle a fair amount of bloodshed and violence, there’s something else to consider. The length . The movie runs 3 hours. It is not as intense or violent as 300, but at the same time, it is a lot slower. There are a lot of long dramatic scenes.

What’s the Best Spot to Use the Bathroom in The Odyssey Movie?

There are a lot of slower spots in The Odyssey Movie. And you aren’t going to miss a lot being gone for two or three minutes. However, there are a couple of spots that would be a bummer to miss. In the middle of the movie where Odysseus and his crew are trying to get home, that’s a good spot to slip out. Try not to slip out during anything with Penelope or Telemachus.

Three Things I Appreciated About The Odyssey Movie

1. The way this team reimagined some of the monsters and characters was fantastic. I was raised on classic literature and have seen monsters and gods depicted in a ton of different ways. But these monsters were depicted in very imaginative ways. And the gods were important to the story, but not physical characters, which was so well done but different.
2. I think this is worth restating. I really appreciated that they did not show any graphic nudity, r*pe, or intimate scenes. They didn’t deem it necessary to the story, and I didn’t miss it at all.
3. Going into the movie, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get into the characters and stories because of the amount of notable actresses and actors. Added with the classical background. But it is unfortunate how relevant the ancient story is today. And while it was a little distracting, all of the people acting in the movie were phenomenal.
