The Mandalorian and Grogu Discussion Questions
“The Old Protect the Young and The Young Protect the Old. This Is the Way. “is one of the more memorable lines in this film. What does it mean? If discussing with children, how is this likely to play out in their lives?
“Before going into harms way, check your armor first.” A simple quote with a simple lesson – be prepared. Why is it good to prepare as opposed to being compulsive? Where are some places preparation is a good thing?
“Life’s Messy, But We Do the Best We Can” is a quote that comes from a character who comes from a bad background but is trying to live a changed life. Why do bad family origins not dictate future bad behavior?
The Mandalorian and Grogu Review
Minor spoilers are in the review…
The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first theatrical release since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019. It is above all a summer movie. It opens with a fast-paced 20 minute action sequence. It has all of the Star Wars elements – spaceships, new worlds, strange creatures. It has a lot of humor – especially in the back half of the movie with the Anzellans.
First thing to note – you do not need to be familiar with any of Star Wars, movies or streaming, to enjoy this movie. There are some extra things viewers familiar with the show can enjoy (more on that in a minute), but those with no knowledge can catch on easily.
For those that may not know, a few things that may help.
- Mandalore is a planet located in the Outer Rim in the Star Wars universe. It was generally believed to have been made uninhabitable by the Empire, and the few Mandalorians left scattered through the galaxy.
- Mandalorians are fierce warriors who wear armor made of the almost impenetrable metal beskar.
- There were various groups of Mandalorians left. One, the Children of the Watch, was a small group with a strict belief that a Mandalorian always wear their ask when around others. “This is the Way” is a motto.
- The Hutts are crime family. If you saw the original trilogy, you met Jabba. Rotta is his son.
- Din Djarin, “The Mandalorian”, was a bounty hunter. Assigned to find Grogu (the baby Yoda character), he abandoned his mission and at the time of the movie has adopted Grogu.
- You can, if you are interested, learn more in the three seasons of The Mandalorian, the Book of Bobba Fwett, and The Clone Wars
It is touching (for a father) when Alita, about ¾ of the way in, calls Dr. Ido “father” and means it.
After 20 minutes of action, we learn that the Mandalorian and Grogu are working for the New Republic. They are hunting down old Imperial warlords who want to bring back the evil galactic empire. To get information, he is tasked with finding and capturing Rotta the Hutt and returning him to the Hutt home planet.
There are some good simple lessons, some of which are outlined above, but mainly the movie is fun. Lots of action. Humor. Some well-known actors in minor roles. The good guys are good, and the bad guys are bad. People are still noting that there is clapping at the end – we like to see the forces of good defeat the forces of evil. Last note – unlike Marvel, Star Wars does generally not do mid credit or end credit scenes.
