Background on Fantastic Four: First Steps
The Fantastic Four was one of the original Marvel Comics and has been one of the longest-running series. It was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the original driving forces behind Marvel. This is the third reboot of the characters.
Further Summary (contains minor spoilers)
The movie takes place on Earth-828 (in the Marvel multiverse, and the DC one as well, there are multiple Earths, each with their own set of superheroes. This was originally done to allow the comics to reboot their characters and make changes to them (you want to change a character, make it a different Earth). On this earth, in the early 60s, a family of scientists travels to space, is bombarded with cosmic radiation, and returns with superpowers. Four years later, they are known and loved as the guardians of Earth, when they must defend the planet from a ravenous space being of immense power called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, the Silver Surfer.
There are numerous reviews and summaries of the movie available on the web.
Discussion Questions from Fantastic Four and Thoughts
(some spoilers)
- The Power of Family
One of the most appealing things about the movie is its portrayal of family. The Fantastic Four are a married (happily married) couple, the wife’s younger brother, and the dad’s best friend. There is very minor friction (perhaps less than would be realistic). The crucial plot point is that Sue Richards (the wife) is pregnant, and Galactus asks for their unborn child to spare the Earth (there is a reason for this). They refuse, and this sets up the conflict. But it also shows the power of family – biological and found. The question is – how important is family?
- Sacrifice
So many movies and TV series in the Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc., universes have recently shown a bent towards strong utilitarianism– the end justifies the means. There is a potential spin here that looks utilitarian – will the Fantastic Four save one child by sacrificing everyone on earth? This is shown to be false as they rally the entire planet to work together, to sacrifice, to repel Galactus. This ultimately calls for a tremendous sacrifice. The question: do the ends justify the means, or are there principles that must be upheld that may require sacrifice?
- The Villain
Galactus is amoral. He is not “evil” – he does what he does without recourse to morals, to feed (he eats planets). This ties into the above point and leads to an interesting question: Which is worse? An evil villain? Or an amoral villain?
A Few Final Thoughts
-Is the series Hobbit Safe? Your standard action-adventure movie, some scares, but generally a little less than others. Suitable for hobbits about 11 and up.
– Are there mid/post-credit scenes? The mid-credit is important; the end is just fun.
