Petey, an evil cat bent on taking over the city, won’t let this new challenger stop his attempts!
Dog Man Movie Parent Review
For readers of the book series, the Dog Man movie does a great job at bringing our beloved half man, half dog to the big screen! This film carries the fun, ridiculous humor and action of Dav Pilkey, which lends to a very family-friendly watch.
The heart of the story actually doesn’t come from Dog Man though. When Petey is set on getting a clone of himself, he accidently creates Lil Petey (a child version of himself). At first, he treats him like an unwanted child, but throughout the film he softens up to him and begins to truly care for him.
The surprising subplot was dealing with Petey’s generational trauma. The managed to tackle the seriousness of Petey’s past, while maintaining the light hearted feel of the entire film. Besides this, a lot of the movie are quick cut jokes and cartoon gags (which isn’t a bad thing).
Ultimately, for fans of the series and for those who have never opened a graphic novel, this is a great movie to watch with the family. One more special shoutout: Pete Davidson did phenomenal as Petey. He had the perfect voice for the sillier kind of villain and handled the big emotions very well.
A Note for Adoptive/Foster Families
As mentioned above, a large subplot of this film involves Petey accidentally creating a child clone of himself. For quite a bit of the movie after this, he treats Lil Petey quite poorly and states and implies several times that Lil Petey is not his child. By the end of the film, Petey does soften on his view of Lil Petey, but this still may be troubling for some children.
Also, at the end of the movie, Petey decides to share custody of Lil Petey with Dog Man. Although this is more reminiscent of a divorced family’s situation, it can still conjure up feelings regarding foster and bio families.
