Quick Summary of a Minecraft Movie
Steve has always yearned for the mines. When he is old enough, he returns to the mines and finds a way into the Overworld. This Minecraft world is everything he every hoped for, but things turn sour when he finds his way into the Nether. This eventually leads to others entering the world of Minecraft and they must not only try to find their way back home, but also save the world of Minecraft from Malgosha.
A Minecraft Movie Parent Review
Huge disclaimer before we dive too much further into this review: I have played Minecraft a decent amount with my daughter, but I am far from a die hard fan and many references went past me. That aside though, I thought this was quite a fun movie that offers at least a little bit for everyone. Each character provides just enough to keep you entertained and invested. The humor from Jack Black (Steve) and Jason Momoa (Garrett) could be a bit much for me at times, but also had the largest laughs of the movie. Natalie’s story definitely provides the most amount of heart as she is trying to learn to care for her little brother after the assumed death of their mother.
In terms of appropriateness for your kids, this movie is a bit interesting. Overall, I’d say if your kid plays Minecraft and can handle the realistic version of the monsters, you should be overall good to enjoy the movie. If your child is sensitive to death (parent dies offscreen) or violence towards animals, that may be a topic to cover prior to watching. Several animals are killed (in the Minecraft way) and poof into a meat chop. In the Nether, there are many relatively scary monsters. Possibly the scariest is the Enderman (which is also pretty true of the game).
This movie was filled with SO many jokes and the pace was quite intense that even if there was a moment you found dull or unentertaining, it really didn’t sit for very long. Overall, even thought this may not technically be the greatest movie of all time, it is very fun and provides a lot of enjoyable moments!
