Quick In Your Dreams Review

In Your Dreams tells the story of two siblings, Stevie and Elliot, who go on an adventure to visit the Sandman. Their family is going through a struggle and the kids believe that a granted wish from the Sandman can repair their family.

Overall, this is a fun, emotional movie about family relations, even complicated ones. The concept of dream adventures is fun and reminiscent of Little Nemo and Alice in Wonderland. This movie may not reach those heights of world-building and spectacle, but In Your Dreams still provides a fun family movie night for those interested.

One quick note before we check out the Lessons from In Your Dreams: This movie deals heavily with bitter sibling rivalries and potential parent divorce/separation. Be sure your family is in a place to enjoy this movie before letting your littles dive into this dream adventure.

Lessons from In Your Dreams

Kids Pick up on More than We Think

Oh no. That’s Dad’s fake smile. You can tell by the way his eyes get weird. See? Looks like a dead possum. – Stevie

Although Stevie is more in tune with her parents’ emotions, both her and Elliot can tell something is going on with their parents. At the beginning of the movie, they may not know the significance of it, but as the film goes on, they see the possible devastation ahead.

There is Power in Sibling Relationships

I’m sorry I said you mess everything up. You don’t. You make it better. – Stevie

Stevie’s relationship with Elliot goes through a massive transformation throughout this movie. At the beginning, she sees him as a nuisance and the reason for most of the issues in her family. After some difficult times, she sees that she indeed loves Elliot and he is a pivotal part of their family.

Nightmares can Help us Process the Darkness in Our Lives

Nightmares make us strong so we can face what’s really scary in life. The Unknown. – Nightmara

During one of the more interesting portions of the movie, Nightmara is revealed as a caring character. Although she does delight in the darkness, she also knows that she serves a purpose.

Big Family Decision Need to be Discussed Together

I know you’ve been trying to hold us together. And hearing about al this change must be so scary for you. But listen to me. No matter what happens, we will always love you, and we will always be a family – Mom

So much of this movie revolves around Stevie’s internal struggle to try to save her family and keep it together. Although there are some details Stevie wouldn’t need, it would have saved her a lot of heartache to include her (and possibly Elliot too) in some of the conversations.

There’s No Such Thing as a “Perfect Life”

So it turns out my dreams were trying to tell me something. Life isn’t perfect. And neither are we. But no matter how it changes, we’ll always have each other. And you can’t get any better than that, not even in your dreams. – Stevie

This is perhaps the MAIN lesson from In Your Dreams. Stevie obsesses with trying to help her family in every possible way. She had the perfect version of her family in her head and took it to the extreme to achieve this. Eventually, she learns that perfection is a lie, but there is still beauty in reality.
